2.Check the rocker arm shaft bracket nuts for looseness.
Tighten any loose rocker arm shaft bracket nuts before adjusting the valve clearance.
Tightening torque: 54 Nm(5.5 kg·m/40 Ib·ft)
3.Check for play in the No.1 intake and exhaust valve push rods.
If the No.1 cylinder intake and exhaust valve push rods have play, the No.1 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke.
If the No.1 cylinder intake and exhaust valve push rods are depressed, the No.4 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke.

4.Loosen each valve clearance adjusting screw as shown in the illustration.
·No.1 Cylinder T.D.C.(Compression stroke)
5.Insert a feeler gauge of the appropriate thickness between the rocker arm and the valve stem end.
6.Turn the valve clearance adjusting screw until a slight drag can be felt on the feeler gauge.
7.Tighten the lock nut securely.
8.Rotate the crankshaft 360° .
9.Realign the crankshaft damper pulley TDC notched line with the timing pointer.
10.Adjust the clearance for the remaining valves as shown in the illustration.

Compression pressure inspection
·Warm-up the engine.
·Remove the battery negative terminal and remove all glow plugs.
Disconnect the injector harness connector.(this will prevent fuel injection.)
NOTE:
When the harness connector is removed, the ECM determines a malfunction and records the DTC.After the end of measurement,be sure to clear the ECM memory.
(Refer to "Diagnostic Information and Procedures"in Section 6E,Engine Control System.)
·Connect the battery negative terminal.
·Engage the starter to discharge foreign materials from inside the cylinders.
·Install the compression gauge adaptor and the gauge.
Special Tool
Compression gauge adaptor:
5-8531-7001-0
Compression gauge(with Adapter): 5-8840-2008-0
·Sequentially measure each cylinder.
NOTE:
To ensure that engine speed of more than 200 r/min, use a fully charged battery.
·Remove the compression gauge special tool.
·Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
·Installall of the glow plugs.
Tightening torque
Glow plug: 23 Nm(2.3 kg·m/17 Ib-ft)
Glow plug connector: 1.0 N·m(0.1 kg·m/8.5 Ib-in)
·Install the injector harness connector.
·Connect the battery negative terminal.
